Morley's on Acton Vale Given Zero-Star Hygiene Rating
Inspectors unimpressed by management of fried chicken takeaway

The Morley’s Chicken branch on Acton Vale has been handed a zero-star food hygiene rating making it the only outlet in the 100-plus-strong chain to receive the lowest possible score.
Inspectors visited the takeaway at 141 The Vale in July and have since issued low marks across all three categories of assessment: Food Hygiene and Safety, Structural Compliance, and Confidence in Management. The report concluded that major improvement was necessary in food hygiene. Although serious, this is not the lowest possible judgement in that category — the most severe rating, urgent improvement necessary, is typically reserved for premises posing an immediate risk to public health and can be accompanied by an emergency closure order.
The most critical finding concerned management, where the branch received the lowest possible score. This category reflects the operator’s track record and systems, and the rating indicates poor compliance, little or no technical knowledge, little or no appreciation of hazards or quality control, and no food-safety management system in place.
Morley’s, founded in South London in 1985, operates through a network of individually run outlets that license the brand. The chain grew organically across Brixton, Norwood, Streatham, Tooting and Peckham before expanding into areas such as Acton, Wembley and parts of north London.
Known for its fried chicken, wings, burgers and meal deals, Morley’s has built a loyal following through its unfussy formula of fast service, familiar flavours and low prices. The Acton Vale branch typically operates long hours — 11am to 11pm daily — serving commuters, families, school crowds and late-night customers.
Across the wider network, hygiene standards are generally strong: the vast majority of Morley’s branches hold four- or five-star ratings, and none others currently have a zero score.
The company did not respond to a request for comment.
The Acton Vale branch will remain listed with a zero rating until improvements are made and a re-inspection is carried out by the council.
