The Papa Johns restaurant in North Acton has been given the lowest possible food-hygiene rating following a routine inspection by the local authority. This prompted the temporary closure of the site and a rapid round of corrective actions has been promised by the franchise owner.

The branch, located on Victoria Road near North Acton station, has been operating for several years and is run under Papa Johns’ franchise model, in which individual operators manage day-to-day business under the company’s national brand standards.

The zero rating was issued after an inspection on 12 January, during which environmental health officers identified a series of issues serious enough to require immediate action. A zero rating indicates that major improvements were deemed necessary across key areas such as food handling, cleanliness, and management of food-safety processes.

Like most Papa Johns outlets in the UK, it is operated by a franchisee rather than the company directly. Franchise owners are responsible for maintaining hygiene standards, staff training and compliance with local regulations, while the national brand provides operational guidance, marketing and supply-chain support.

Papa Johns confirmed that the necessary remedial work was carried out and that the branch was subsequently allowed to reopen once officers were satisfied that immediate risks had been resolved.

A Papa Johns spokesperson said, “Following a routine inspection on January 12, our Acton restaurant was temporarily closed while the franchise owner addressed the issues identified by the local authority. All required corrective actions were implemented and the local authority subsequently allowed the restaurant to reopen. A re-rate request has been submitted and the franchise owner welcomes a further visit to ensure the improvements made are reflected in an updated rating.”

The franchise owner will now await a follow-up inspection. Under the Food Standards Agency system, businesses that receive a zero rating are encouraged to make improvements quickly and can request a re-inspection once they believe standards have been raised.

The North Acton branch continues to trade while it awaits reassessment.
