B&M Bargains advertising for manager in the area
September 10, 2026 Discount retailer B&M Bargains appears poised to arrive in Acton, after the company posted an advert for a manager for a new store in the area. The job listing has fuelled local speculation that B&M may be preparing to move into the former Poundland unit at The Oaks Shopping Centre, next door to the newly opened TK Maxx. Poundland closed its store earlier this year, and the large ground-floor unit remains vacant. However, the retailer has not yet confirmed where any branch would be located and has not responded to our questions about its plans. We have been unable to contact the management of the shopping centre for comment. After Wilko shut at The Oaks in September 2023, there was early speculation that B&M might take over the unit. The chain went on to acquire 51 former Wilko sites across the UK — but not the Acton branch, which has since been taken by TK Maxx. B&M is one of the UK’s fastest-growing discount retailers. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in Speke, Liverpool, it now operates 799 stores in the UK and 147 in France, alongside additional sites under the Heron Foods brand. The company employs more than 32,000 people in the UK and over 5,000 at Heron Foods, and is listed on the London Stock Exchange as part of the FTSE 250.
The retailer’s model is similar to Poundland’s focusing on selling branded FMCG goods — groceries, soft drinks, confectionery, alcohol, toiletries and cleaning products — alongside general merchandise such as homewares, electricals, gardening supplies, toys, DIY and seasonal ranges. Stores are designed around “best-selling lines” rather than full ranges, with around 20% of floor space changing seasonally. Much of its general merchandise is bought directly from factories in the Far East, allowing the chain to offer disruptive pricing and maintain its “treasure-hunt” browsing experience. B&M continues to expand rapidly, opening 41 new UK stores in FY26, and has long-term ambitions to reach up to 1,200 sites nationwide.
