Poundland in the Oaks Shopping Centre Looks Set to Close |

Staff telling customers shop will cease trading within a month
April 23, 2026 Poundland’s future in The Oaks Shopping Centre remains unconfirmed, but staff say the Acton branch is preparing to close on 21 May , amid a wider pattern of instability and store losses across the chain. Poundland has not yet issued an official statement, but multiple customers report being told by staff that the Acton store will shut next month. Employees have not been given assurances of jobs at other locations. The branch occupies a prominent unit inside The Oaks Shopping Centre, where it has traded since the centre opened in 2019 as part of the redevelopment of the site. Poundland and the owner of the centre have been asked for comment. If confirmed, the closure would mark another significant loss for The Oaks, which has struggled to retain tenants. The long-vacant former Wilko unit next door — empty since Wilko’s collapse in 2023 — has recently shown signs of activity, with lights on and movement inside, though no new tenant has yet been announced. The centre also recently lost its Starbucks, which closed its branch next to the main entrance earlier this year.
The potential Acton closure comes at a turbulent time for Poundland nationally. The chain’s parent company, Pepco Group, has been undergoing a major restructuring programme, with up to 200 stores at risk of closure across the UK as the company shifts away from fast-moving consumer goods and explores a possible sale of the Poundland brand. Recent confirmed closures include the Chiswick High Road branch, which shut in May last year, and the Southwark Park Road and Clapham Junction Station stores, all part of a wave of shutdowns linked to falling revenues and a strategic overhaul. Poundland has also reported an 18-store net reduction in its estate over the past financial year, with revenues falling by 6.5% in the six months to March 2025. The company has told investors it is “actively exploring separation options” for the business, with an exit from Pepco expected by the end of the current financial year. For Acton residents, the loss of Poundland would remove one of the few large, low-cost retailers in the town centre. The Oaks has long struggled to establish itself as a thriving shopping destination, and the departure of another anchor tenant would raise further questions about the centre’s long-term viability.
