Police say there has recently been a burglary on Avenue Road. The suspect tricked his way in to the victims home in order to steal property from the address.

The victim was an elderly lady.

She was taking the rubbish out when a man entered her home. When she approached him, he said that he had come to fix the washing machine, and asked her to empty out the cupboard next to it.

Whilst she did this the man took her handbag and purse.

Please be aware that people will use deception in order to gain access to properties and steal valuables. Do not let anyone into your home unless you are certain they are from a legitimate organisation. Always ask for identification.

If you receive a knock on the door from somebody in circumstances you deem to be suspicious, and have grounds to suspect a bogus call do not let them into your home. Call 999.

You could also contact your Safer Neighbourhoods Team, (see box right for details) or alternatively call the non emergency number on 0300 123 1212.
