A scheme specially designed to help local young people into employment, education and training is inviting applications. The new ‘Get Set’ programme wants to hear from 16-24 year olds interested in learning valuable skills and gaining work experience.

Get Set offers young people a one or two-day volunteer work placement in a local organisation. Participants also benefit from attending short courses and everyone taking part is given a mentor. Their job is to offer support, set targets, give advice on any personal issues that might get in the way and work regularly with the young person as they move into paid work or further training.

Travel and lunch expenses are provided. Applications are invited all year round.

Councillor Binda Rai, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Get Set replaces our previous, successful volunteering scheme called V-Talent. We have taken the very best of that scheme and made it more tailored to the individual young people taking part; matching volunteer placements with their interests and increasing the support on offer.

“Another important change is that young people can apply to be part of the programme at any point in the year which means they can come to us when it’s the right time for them.

“Our volunteering schemes are very successful and the majority of participants move on to apprenticeships, further training and work. Get Set could be the first step into a bright future for a young person and I encourage people to get in touch with us and find out more.”
