Evening viewing part of national scheme raising funds for charity
August 5, 2025 A hidden gem in Acton is set to welcome visitors this August as part of the National Garden Scheme. The garden at 41 Mill Hill Road, winner of Ealing in Bloom’s Best Improved Garden award in 2011, will open its gates to the public on 15 August, offering a rare glimpse into a thoughtfully cultivated private space. The garden is divided into two distinct areas: the original, surprisingly secluded garden and a newer section developed in 2019. The older part features a large lawn bordered by a 50-foot herbaceous border filled with climbing roses and clematis, alongside a lavender hedge and spring border. A raised and paved area at the far end includes box topiary and a rose arbour, with compost heaps and additional planting beds tucked behind. The soil, noted for its light and dry qualities, supports a growing collection of salvias and other unusual herbaceous perennials, many of which are propagated from seed or cuttings by the owner. The newer garden includes a meadow, pond, and gravel garden, with ample seating throughout. Adjacent to the house is a sunny terrace planted with scented wall shrubs, lilies, oleander, and pelargoniums. This leads to a paved area with raised vegetable beds, sheds topped with living roofs, and a greenhouse producing tomatoes, cucumbers, and chillies. A hornbeam hedge separates this productive zone from the rest of the garden. Visitors can enjoy refreshments, including wine, and browse a selection of plants for sale. The garden is dog-friendly, welcomes groups and coaches, and offers tours by arrangement from May to September. Admission is £7 for adults, with children admitted free. The open evening runs from 6pm to 8pm, and tickets can be booked in advance or purchased on arrival. The opening is part of the National Garden Scheme, which has been inviting the public into private gardens across England and Wales since 1927. The scheme raises millions of pounds for nursing and health charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie, while promoting the therapeutic and communal value of gardening. Many of the gardens featured are rarely accessible to the public, making each visit a unique opportunity to explore horticultural creativity and local character. For those interested in visiting 41 Mill Hill Road, the nearest tube station is Acton Town. From there, visitors can walk up Gunnersbury Lane and take the second right onto Mill Hill Road.
