Lamp column displays aim to reflect local heritage and identity
September 4, 2025 A new series of lamp column banners has been installed across Acton, featuring digital artworks inspired by the area’s history, architecture, and cultural diversity. The banners, now visible along the High Street, Churchfield Road, and The Vale, were commissioned by Your Acton BID as part of ongoing efforts to improve the visual character of the town centre. The designs were created by two local artist groups: Tasia Graham in collaboration with JG Contemporary Art, and The Imprint Hub working with ARTification. Each group produced a series of works that draw on Acton’s landmarks and community narratives, with themes ranging from local flora and public parks to historic buildings and places of worship. Tasia Graham’s contributions include abstract designs referencing the borough’s multicultural heritage, alongside depictions of Acton Park and its wildflower meadow. Her work incorporates elements such as the 1970s council tower and the park’s Victorian bandstand, aiming to evoke a sense of unity and tranquillity. The Imprint Hub and ARTification focused on architectural heritage, producing six pieces that highlight buildings such as Acton Town Hall, St Mary’s Church, and the former Dominion Theatre. Their designs use expressive colour palettes and stylistic variations to reflect the evolution of Acton’s built environment, from medieval foundations to 20th-century civic and cultural landmarks.
Among the featured sites are Acton Central station’s original booking hall, now the Station House Pub, and the London Transport Museum Depot, which houses a significant collection of transport artefacts. The banners also include a depiction of Acton Mosque, established in 1980 and recognised for its distinctive dome and community role. The project was managed by Bay Media and forms part of Your Acton BID’s wider programme to enhance public spaces and foster local engagement. The banners are intended to be inclusive and visually striking, contributing to a sense of place and encouraging residents and visitors to reflect on Acton’s identity. This initiative follows previous public art campaigns in the area and continues the BID’s collaboration with artists and community organisations to animate the town centre through creative interventions.
