We thought we would take a straw poll in Acton to see how locals were getting on with deciding on which boxes to mark next Thursday.

Acton High Street and the Oaks was our destination. Many people avoided us as though we were asking them to donate funds for a political party, rushing past in a panic as we asked them whether they would mind answering a few quick questions on the forthcoming election.

However, we gathered together some interesting comments from the small number of people who spoke to us. The results are presented in full in the table below.

It is interesting that two people gave completely opposing views of the High Street and surrounding areas. One said she felt safe, another said he found the area had deteriorated and felt threatened.

Out of a total of 9 people, 6 were undecided, and the remaining three voters chose Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrats respectively.

So, based on this very unscientific sample of Acton residents, it would seem that it is going to be a very close thing in this constituency.

It is worth noting that the 'poll' was carried out after two election debates with the three party leaders had been broadcast.

“My house is in a terrible state. It’s full of damp and Ealing Homes do nothing to help me. However, the local environment has improved. There is a stronger police presence and I feel safer”

“I didn’t like Labour but then the Conservatives said we all had to be married so that’s bad news. I don’t like governments telling us what to do. Lib Dems are closing down A&E and Harmoni in Ealing Hospital. They should tell us their policies – not what the other parties are doing”

“I’ve been watching what goes on in the House of Commons. There is so much opposition between Labour and Conservative. Lib Dems are kept far away and don’t get taken seriously. They are clever. Some of their policies aren’t thought through but they are interesting.”

“The High St and surrounding areas are no good. Compared to how it was 6 or 7 years ago it’s very dangerous now with drugs and kids up to no good. Last week I was threatened for money with a knife but I didn’t tell the Police because I am too scared of what might happen to my family.”
