Clothes mending, book swap, and more

Spots for small electrical repairs are now fully booked
January 15, 2026
Residents are invited to a hands-on day of repair, reuse and recycling at Acton Gardens Community Centre on Saturday 17 January, as ReActon teams up with The Restart Project and Ealing Repair Café for a free community event from 11am to 2pm.
While slots for small electrical repairs are now fully booked, there’s still plenty to take part in — including clothes mending workshops, upcycling demos, and a book swap. The event is part of a growing movement to reduce waste, revive repair skills, and help residents make the most of what they already own.
Ealing Repair Café will be on hand with sewing machines, scrap fabric and expert guidance to help you mend your clothes. Bring one or two items and learn how to patch, stitch or rework them — or simply come along for inspiration. No booking is required, but you can reserve a place online.
There will also be upcycling activities for all ages, including:
- Making yarn from old t-shirts
- Creating bracelets or keychains from fabric scraps
- Demonstrations on turning jeans into draught excluders
- How to make drawstring bags from worn-out t-shirts
Visitors can drop off or pick up books at the ReActon book swap, and donate items for reuse and recycling, including:
- Clothes and clothes hangers
- Small e-waste (items that fit in a standard plastic bag)
- Terracycle recycling streams
Repairers will be working on small household items such as kettles, toasters, lamps, and radios — but all slots are now full. For future events, check The Restart Party or Chiswick Repair Café, which is also hosting a session on 17 January from 10.30am to 1pm.
The Restart Project says the event is part of a wider effort to tackle e-waste and reduce the environmental impact of throwaway culture. “We’re losing repair skills in our communities, throwing more away, and buying more new,” they say. “It’s building a mountain of e-waste while using ever more of our planet’s limited resources.”
If you have electrical repair skills and want to help, ReActon is recruiting volunteers for Ealing’s Electrical Repair Team.
