Nearly 60 parking bays in Hammersmith town centre are set to be closed for virtually the whole of 2014, Transport for London revealed this week.

TfL says it needs to shut 58 bays in Sussex Place, near Hammersmith Apollo, for eleven months to make way for flyover repair works.

Engineering firm Costain is carrying out £60million worth of repairs to strengthen the 50 year-old Hammersmith Flyover. TfL says the works include replacing bearings, waterproofing and resurfacing the deck and replacing the bridge’s drainage system.

In a letter to local people TfL wrote: " The works to strengthen the flyover require the flyover to be accessed from roads below the flyover. To enable works such as drilling, installation of strengthening cables and jacking the flyover for replacing the bearings to take place, the parking at Sussex Place is to be suspended and the area to be secured by hoarding."

The parking bays will be suspended from January 2 until November 2014 – with the rest of the flyover repairs to be finished by summer 2015.
