A month-long celebration of learning kicked off in Ealing yesterday with the official launch of the Opening Doors to Learning Festival.

The festival, the first of its kind to be held in Ealing, will see local schools, community groups and council services join together to encourage creativity and learning across the borough.

A series of free performances, workshops and open days are being held throughout June, with many events providing opportunities for parents and carers to get more involved in their children’s education.

Participating venues in Acton include: Acton High School, Berrymede Primary School, West Acton Primary School, St Martin's Church in Hale Gardens, Playground in Acton Park, East Acton Primary School, Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls, Gunnersbury Park Museum and West Twyford Primary School. (full details below)

Highlights include:
• An open rehearsal with the Ealing Schools Orchestra, in which children and parents who can play an instrument to a grade two standard can join in (4 June)
• A workshop to help parents support their children with science lessons and homework (9 June)
• A number-crunching gameshow designed to push primary school children to the limits of their addition and subtraction skills (22 June)
• An Ealing Primary Science Fair, which will showcase the best scientific investigations conducted by Ealing’s year five pupils (24 June)

A series of professional workshops aimed at teachers and other practitioners will also be held, with the full programme and details of all events available at www.egfl.org.uk/learningfestival or phone 020 8825 6947.

Ealing Council’s Executive Director for Children and Adults, David Archibald, said: “It’s hard not to be inspired by the innovation, creativity and commitment we see every day in our schools and learning centres.

“This festival opens our doors to the community, showcasing these achievements and encouraging even more people to take advantage of the learning opportunities available here. We’d encourage residents to join in and help make the festival something really special."
