Ealing will officially fly the flag for England during the forthcoming World Cup tournament.

It follows a huge outcry after environmental waste company May Gurney banned flags from refuse lorries.

The Council's new Labour administration has been quick to distance itself from the flag/lorry row and Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, Councillor Bassam Mahfouz wrote to the company asking them to reconsider their controversial decision.

He also asked Ealing's Chief Executive Martin Smith to allow a flag to be flown over the Town Hall during the tournament.

A council spokesperson told us the Chief Executive has agreed that the St George flag will fly above the Town Hall and stay for as long as England remains in the tournament.
