A Michelin trained chef who once had the misfortune to eat a bad portion of fish and chips and vowed he never would again is delighted his Acton chippy is in the running for a top award.

Jack Stone has previously worked in a variety restaurants throughout the world including The Greenhouse Restaurant, Mayfair, Gordon Ramsey and Coutts, in the Strand, where he once served dinner to The Queen, (guinea fowl - not fish and chips).

He opened Stone's on Horn Lane in August 2015 and has built up a regular, loyal following which he puts down to good quality products cooked well: He says:

'' We never precook fish because the emphasis is on freshness. This gets a bit hairy on Friday nights but we manage it. As much as we can, we make all the food in house. This includes homemade pies, fish cakes, chicken, fresh chicken nuggets, all the sides, burgers.  etc. We display all of our recipes on the walls of the shop so customers can see exactly what's in their food. We offer quirky extras such as free homemade crisps, a range of flavoured salts which we blend and different vinegars that we make. Customer service- this is a very important for us. Everyone is greeted when they walk in and I emphasise to my staff this importance of serving food with a smile. ''

He entered the National Fish and Chips Awards competition in summer as best newcomer and the shop was whittled down to the final 10 after a secret shopper was sent out to experience the chippy for themselves.

This month there will be another 'secret' visit and, by the 31st the top 3 will be revealed with the winner announced in the awards ceremony in January.

This is a national award and Stone's is the only chippy representing London.
