The Road To Hope: Building Peace and Trust in a Fractured World

Public lecture by Robert Harrap on peace proposal issued to the United Nations

As we go about our daily lives, what we think, say, and do in every single moment affects us and the world around us. A friendly smile to a neighbour can make us feel happier, and this happiness is transmitted to others, with a cumulative effect. Our individual action can lead to positive change on a larger scale.

We live in a fractured world – the threat of nuclear war, the refugee crisis, xenophobic attacks, and rising inequality all create a climate of fear, making us feel powerless, without hope, and distrustful of others. Yet we can all make a difference. We all have a unique and valuable part to play to ensure that our vibrant and diverse community of Acton remains welcoming, peaceful, and safe.

Robert Harrap, General Director of SGI-UK, a lay Buddhist organisation, will introduce and discuss a peace proposal issued to the United Nations, which offers practical solutions on how to build a better society, focusing in particular on the contributions of young people, and setting out key challenges.

The peace proposal was issued to the UN in January 2017 by Daisaku Ikeda, Buddhist philosopher, peace-builder and President of Soka Gakkai International (SGI).

Robert Harrap has been SGI-UK’s general director since 2013, before which he worked as a barrister in the area of employment, social housing and human rights. He appears regularly on BBC Radio 2’s Pause for Thought.
