The 'official' opening of Acton's much anticipated new leisure centre - scheduled for next month- has been delayed until May because of building problems.

Everyone Active Acton Centre, was due to open to the public on Saturday 5 April, but a council spokesperson said:

''The opening of the Everyone Active Acton Centre has been delayed and the free family open day has been rescheduled to 10 May.

“The £19 million of refurbishment work has transformed the former Acton Town Hall into an amazing facility for local people, but there is a problem with the balustrade which means that the main staircase cannot be used yet.

“We are disappointed that the opening has been delayed particularly given the herculean efforts of our builders to complete the centre works during the wettest winter since records began.  However the contractor has told us that there is a technical issue with the balustrade which requires further work before it is complete. Without the stairs being useable the building cannot fully be opened to the public.

“We know that local people want to start using their fantastic new facilities and we expect to be able to open the building in stages throughout April.  Everyone Active will be contacting their members directly and there will be further publicity about the free family open day.”
