Local youngsters have helped launch a new piece of play equipment on the South Acton Estate.

It was part of a community event called ‘Get Involved’ organised by the Acton Community Forum which saw dozens of local groups and schools coming together.

The new equipment is an actual racing boat, called the ‘Billy Budd’.

Staff and young people from Ealing Council’s Bollo Brook Youth Centre worked with playground engineers, Apes at Play, to move the boat to its new home outside the Oaktree Community Centre and transform it into an unusual and exciting place for local children to play.

Around 21 young people worked on the project over three months. It was supported by a £10,000 grant from SITA Trust, an organisation that provides funding to youth volunteering projects. Ealing Council topped up the funding with an extra £1,000.

Councillor Patricia Walker, cabinet member for Children and Young People, said: “I would like to thank the young people from Bollo Brook Youth Centre who volunteered their time and efforts to create an original piece of play equipment for the children in their area.

“This is a positive example of young people working together to give something back to their local community.”
