Fears For Future of Acton Art Deco Building

Residents say plans to turn 1930's block into flats are 'overbearing'

There are growing concerns for an art deco building in Acton which residents fear will be destroyed by over development.

Plans are underway to turn the former theatre props building at no 16 The Vale, The Lewis Scher House, (Brown brothers) into a complex of 2 and 3 bed flats. The application proposes adding an extra 3 floors, which locals say will destroy the 'aesthetic beauty' of the building and its contribution to the area.

Campaigners say the redevelopment is being pushed through without consultation with local residents who will be directly affected.

Chair (OVRA) Oak Vale Residents Association, Shahzad Ahmed says:

''The existing building is a fine example of an art deco building. Originally built in 1937, the design and detailing are relatively simple and influenced by the art deco style of its time. The result is that the building is locally distinctive and has an inherent quality making a fine positive contribution to the area. This is a substantial over-development of the site with a modern top heavy extension which looks totally out of place. Adding 3 additional floors to an already substantial building creates several problems in itself.  The proposed re-development will destroy the beauty of this fine art deco building making it look top heavy – the modern additions do not suit it.''

A number of objections have been sent in to Ealing Council including from the neighbouring borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Their Planning Director writes about the application, objecting due to the '' height and bulk of the proposed extensions' which would have an 'overbearing impact and result in a loss of outlook for properties opposite the site located within Hammersmith and Fulham.'

Conservationists from the Twentieth Century Society have also made their objections known. They say: '' The scale and style of this overpowering extension should be resisted as causing significant harm. The Society urges the Counci lto refuse this damaging application and prevail upon the applicants to re-consider the scale and impact of their proposals.''

Objections should be sent to Ealing Council planning reference PP/2015/5938

It's expected to be determined by Ealing Planning committee on 16th March.
